David Houchin

About

Having changed from studying engineering at London University to three years at Farnham Art School specialising in sculpture (Jan 1955 to July 1957), David opted to earn a living by other means, went into National Service and then had a successful career through the sales side of publishing, with home and family in Sussex. Some twenty-one years before retiring in 2000 he joined a sculpture evening class in Westminster, which later moved to Park Walk under Kensington and Chelsea.

He exhibited in The Society of Portrait Sculptor's exhibitions in 1980, '82 and '83. Disappointed with the failure of The Society to continue, he was instrumental in re-establishing The Society and its exhibitions starting again in 1996 as Honorary Secretary. Earlier commissions were of friends and for charity through auctions of promises. He first exhibited with The Chelsea Art Society in 1981, where he has exhibited and sold work over many years as a member.

He is a keen draftsman and a founder member of a regular drawing group in Gunnersbury Park that started in 1995. His sculpture has grown hand in hand with his work for The Society of Portrait Sculptors as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer, providinga full and rewarding, first love and second career, and was awarded The Society's Jean Masson Davidson Medal in 2002.
