About
As a student in the 1970s at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London Ian Rank-Broadley eschewed the prevailing fashions of the day and dedicated himself to study of the figure. The intuitive understanding of the body and its movement is crucial to Rank-Broadley's working method. With an impressive ability for modelling the figure, whether a few inches high or one and a half times life-size, he continues to work for many distinguished clients and patrons.
He is passionate about the use of bronze, a material that can simulate the tactile and aesthetic qualities of the figure.
As a superb craftsman with the ability to produce works that are arresting and powerful, he has gained a considerable reputation as a sculptor. Two large sculptural groups stand at the centre of the Armed Forces Memorial, at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, for which he was awarded the Marsh Award for Public Sculpture in 2008.
His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has been used on all coinage of the U.K. and Commonwealth since 1998; and he won the first Olin-Stones prize for relief portraiture in 2003.
Work by Ian Rank-Broadley appears in the following collections: The Royal Collection, Windsor Castle; British Museum; National Portrait Gallery; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Staatliche Museen, Berlin; Rijksmuseum, Leiden; also private collections in Europe and USA. He lives in a Georgian farmhouse in Gloucestershire with his studio in the grounds. In 1996 he was granted the Freedom of the City of London.
