Mark Richards FRSS
About
My aim in portrait sculpture is to present a sensitive and immediate likeness within a balanced and elegant composition. Success entails unlocking the essence of my subject and this I accomplish by working from live sittings, drawings and photographs. We agree the place and frequency of sittings before beginning the sculpture and I work closely with my client/sitter throughout.
Born in 1958, I have worked as a sculptor since 1983. I read History of Art at Manchester University, trained in sculpture and drawing at The City and Guilds of London Art School and worked for a number of sculpture companies (including Freeman & Sons, Heritage Projects and The Tussauds Group) prior to establishing myself as an independent sculptor in 1992. I am based in Shropshire and travel as my work dictates.
"Mark Richards is regarded as one of the UK's finest portrait sculptors, a genre which marries his unparalleled understanding of clay-modelling techniques with an instinctive empathy for people. Richards' unusual talent for conveying the richness of sculptural form comes from a variety of sources and influences. He has worked on museum and media projects, and travelled extensively in Africa, North America and Europe...
...These experiences have exposed Richards to a variety of cultural and artistic environments. Significantly, they have added to the depth and presence that sculpture requires in its expression of both artistic quality and personality." Mark Wagner. 2003.
