About
Sara was born in Wales but grew up in Berkshire. Following an apprenticeship with figurative sculptors John Doubleday, Lorne McKean and Edwin Russel she studied with Allan Sly at City and Guilds of London. An RA Aeneas Award then took her on a drawing scholarship to Rome and Florence and she won a Tussauds prize and an RI prize on graduation. She completed her Masters in New York, supported by the NYAA and awards from the National Sculpture Society. She continued to work in New York from a studio in Harlem, working on figures for Warner brothers, later sculpting and managing a studio in the heart of Soho for sculptor Rhonda Roland Shearer. She now has a studio in Northamptonshire. She has recently completed several public sculptures and private commissions. Her latest solo show, Frameworks, is on in The Turril Garden, Summertown, Oxford. She was made a full member of SWA in 2023 and shows regularly in London. In addition to her own work as a sculptor she tutors classes at several venues including Raw Umber studios in Stroud, Yardley Arts, and her Weedon Bec Studio.
Sara’s work confronts a number of themes. Firstly, the human condition. Our strange predicament - frailties, flaws and tragedy – but also engaging with a celebration of the higher, beautiful aspects of nature. She sometimes draws on myths and history as a window to understanding the complex nature of what it means to be human. Secondly, connection. What is our context in history? How do we communicate and engage with each other. - Only connect, as Forster said. The model/sculptor relationship is very special in this regard - the magical energy that happens in the creative space. Thirdly, truth. There is an element of spiritual or philosophical enquiry throughout her work.
